Springs. Toritja Nat. Park is ablaze and the fire burned right up to the edge of town. The sky is filled with smoke, the sunlight over the weekend was a strange muted orange colour, and drifts of burnt buffel grass embers blow around the streets. I know we don't have the big eucalypt forests to pose a major threat to life and property but it feels ominous.

Seen outside a cafe in Alice Springs this morning, A couple of toddlers watching in fascination of a large mantis on the pavement, and their parents were joining in. Wonderful to see.

For this weeks #FossilFriday I have the skull of a rather vanilla diprotodontid, Kolopsis torus, from Alcoota. Hundreds of individuals of this species are buried at Alcoota. This one is now on public display at #MegafaunaCentral . Come see it next time you are in #AliceSprings

Alice Springs has been plagued in the last few months by spate of children and youths breaking into houses and businesses, and causing property damage. In the last couple of days we've had our front window smashed, and the windows on our neighbour's smashed. So when we once again heard someone in our yard I ran outside to give them an earful.🧵

@mike Excuse my gloating but yes, yes it is. There are issues living in central Australia, but whatever problem comes my way, a quick walk around the block, will almost certainly reveal some colourful ringneck parrots, or perhaps a cool agamid lizard, and I realise that I am blessed.

Feeling stresses, so despite a sore knee and ankle that needed a rest I went for a mental health hobble through the nearby Olive Pink Botanic Garden. Immediately saw a central bearded dragon sunning its belly on a chain-link fence. 🧵

I always used to think of bowerbirds as exotic far-away birds inhabiting deep forests in the far-off east coast of Australia. There are of course dryland bowerbirds and they are happy to live next to people in towns. This one has decided to build its bower right next to a footpath on a suburban street.

So to get the new year underway I went for a little walk in the park a few houses down from my home for a spot of birdwatching. I managed to see 12 species (not bad). The highlight was a male Western Bowerbird tending to his bower.

I just found this spectacular beetle while pulling into the carpark at work. It is Purpuricenus quadrinotata and from the Atlas of Living Australia and iNaturalist this species is very rarely, if ever, found in the central deserts, preferring the humid margins of the continent.

While walking to the cinema this afternoon, I heard a commotion being made by a group of yellow-throated miners. Often this signifies there is a predator about, often an owl. Upon investigation it turned out to be a family of five boobooks. Two adults and what I presume are their three chicks. I wonder if they were unhomed in yesterday's wild weather?
