#today I have several plastic trays that I keep topped up with water set around in various places in the yard/garden. Every morning, I go around and clean them up and put in fresh water for the wildlife to use. This morning I found this footprint. It spans about 2Β½ inches and I figure it was one of the local raccoons. Usually it's just chipmunks and skunks. π

#today Me: There's 4 days of rain coming. Lets get the butternut squash harvested.
Weather: OK, here's 96β°F (35β°C) temperatures with a 107β°F (42β°C) heat index.
This is the hottest day of the entire year, so far. Result, I gave up at 11AM with job less than half done. Got 69 usable Honeynut squashes harvested for a total of 85 so far. At least that many more waiting in the plot.

#today I thought I'd share these sunflower blooms. I have these popping up all over the property thanks to the blue jay habit of caching seeds from the feeders.

Back to back meetings today. Which seems to be the theme for this week. Trying to retrofit some downtime and I think - 30-45min at the #allotment after work is the easiest way to get itβ¦
#today Started to harvest some of the Honeynut squash that #BeetBear says is ready to go. He especially wanted to try this variety which is new to us because it has "Honey" in it's name. Looks like we'll have plenty for the autumn and winter...π

#today We've begun harvesting some of the Red Delicious apples. They're good eating apples but don't store very well, so what we don't eat immediately gets peeled, cored, and sliced and baked into apple crisp. This is the first year I can remember having apples ready to harvest this early. We're still picking raspberries. The Baldwins and Granny Smiths will be ready in a few weeks. The Baldwins especially are good keepers.

#today It was time to dig up all of the spent corn stalks so they could be transported to the local history center to be used as decorations for their Autumn festival. #BeetBear was a big help and did most of the hard work, stopping only to pose for his beauty shots. Now we're hoping they show up with their truck in the next few days to pick them up.

I spread the spoil from the chipmunk window well debacle on an unused section of the garden. Then it rained and hey-presto I now have a row of sunflowers coming up!

#today took some time out to start harvesting some Cleome houtteana seeds. I must say they are quite generous with the quantity of seed they provide. Also they quite readily self-seed around here. Have not had to buy in any seed since the original plants got here 60 years ago... I save the seed to make sure I have it growing where "I" want it, not just where "it" wants to be.

#today I spent the morning removing 4 cubic feet of chipmunk tunneling spoils from one of my basement window wells. I should have been paying more attention to what they were doing, but it was hard to see in there because I had it covered with one of those plastic half-domes. π¬

#today we just ended our cornfest 2023. Our total ears of #sweetcorn brought to the table from the #garden this season was 197. This is not bad but our third planting ended up a little disappointing because I did not manage to feed the last row of corn enough for a variety of reasons, but lesson is learned for next year! (If I count the 4 ears the squirrels stole we grew 201 ears) Oh, yes, we also have several tons of #tomatoes (lost count)

Pears 'n' hips. First year of getting a decent harvest from the pear tree - it must be five years at least since we planted it. So be warned - they can take a while to settle in! I'm never sure what to do with the big Ramanas rose hips. I know I know - rose hip syrup etc. But they're such a pain to process...
