yesterday in the Maurienne Valley, french 🇫🇷, causing the cut of roads to Italy 🇮🇹.

The relation to the melting, as suggested in the paper, is questionable because of low elevation of the event…
But any impact from the heavy rains of past days?

It's and we fulfilled one of our dreams. What a weekend, what an experience... we were indestructible 🤠

We climbed Ortler (3905m, also called Ortles), the highest mountain in , in the region of , and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

We had great weather, a great company, and an astonishing panorama.

On this I share a pic with you from summer but also winter 🤠

We did a hike to the highest sampling point of the at 3100m. And we climed the nearby summits of Piz Sesvenna (3204m) and Foratrida (3134m).
Mystic atmosphere that day.

Rotor over the Swiss , as seen from Ausserbinn, Canton of . These are caused by lee (a kind of gravity wave) over . Extremely dangerous for aircraft, can exist even in clear air. We can see them in this thanks to the condensed moisture entrained by wave.

Had. Great field day. Got quite a few plots done. And I simply love the tiny but colourful plants in the forefields.

The Ibex were pretty fearless and foraged around while we were working.

I've been away for a week to a beautiful valley in the Alps. I feel so relaxed as if I was gone for four weeks 😊 Except my legs. They were doing overtime!

Arrived in the rain at the , just as a thunderstorm started. Tomorrow and the next days, we will be doing in the forefield of the Hallstätter glacier. And tonight I even spotted an Ibex. I usually saw them only in the other region we will be investigating later this week (close to Adamek hut).

Altesch with Trugberg (3932m asl) in the background. The black streaks are the lateral moraines of the different glacier tributaries. On the sides of the mountains, you can spot the blank walls and the upper debris layers of the former lateral moraines were the glacier surface was (c. 100m higher than today) at the peak of the Little Ice Age (c. 1850).

This was our last excursion to the Swiss this year. But not the last glacier (stay tuned).

Colourfull Alpine plant communities at c. 2300 - 2400 m asl in
The pastures are especially species rich and colourful when slightly disturbed. The grazed pasture without further disturbance (other than cattle grazing and trampling) are less diverse.

Even old snow fields have life. The locally called "glacier blood" is from like bacteria (e.g. Chlamydomonas nivals) and algae (e.g. Ancylonema spp.).
