I think we could mostly solve by making larger districts with ~5 representatives instead of just 1 and then using . That would strike a nice balance between local & proportional representation. For single-person positions, like presidents/governors/mayors, STV becomes (aka aka ) which eliminates the spoiler effect and leads to more civil campaigns.

@jayeless Interesting.

As I understand it, Australian politics for decades have been dominated Labor vs. the Liberal/National coalition. But with the , it seems like it should be easy to put together other parties that have a different set of policies: economically liberal but concerned by the environment, for instance, as in the Teal candidates you discuss. Do you have a theory for why we don't see more strong parties in Australian politics?
