Our next read is Zora Neale Hurston's "Tell My Horse", written about her fieldwork in Jamaica and we're on chapter 3 and it's already brilliant.
There's a great story about an donkey, for example.
But the best part about nightly reads is that the Dude knows what I need him to censor (animal harm, e.g), and he automatically skips it and gives me an executive summary as needed for continuity before moving on.
I have been trying and failing to finish the book I'm reading for the past six hours, so I can get down to the library this afternoon and obtain more books.
About twenty pages left. Can someone force me to concentrate? Clearly, tooting on Maidstone is not helping.

David R. Hawkins' books are hard to read with gusto because of how rich the content is for me. But they're definitely worthwhile. They make me think *hard.* #AmReading Letting Go by David R. Hawkins #bookstodon #BlackMastodon

#AmReading Atomic Anna by Rachel Barenbaum currently, and I'm surprisingly enjoying it! Surprising because for some reason I didn't process from the summary that it's a time travel story and I don't usually like those. The emphasis of the narrative is on the people and the connections between them more than the time travel itself, which I like.

#AmReading an eARC of Garth Nix's #SinisterBooksellersOfLondon and enjoying it thoroughly! Nix's writing is always so engaging, he's definitely one of my favorite discoveries of 2022.

Halfway through “Ocean’s Echo” by #EverinaMaxwell and I have classic happy reader’s mixed feelings: I don’t want it to end — really good book! — but at the same time I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Love the characters, the universe, everything about it. Enough complexity to make it real but I don’t get lost in the details of the world-building.
The first book, “Winter’s Orbit”, was also outstanding — same universe, different cast. Highly recommend!

#AmReading Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb on day ?? of #MECFS crash. Really thankful to have my ability to focus on reading back so I can escape the pain somewhat. Though now I'm having an #MCAS reaction to something and I'm experiencing itching from hell so we'll see if I can read through that. Needless to say, I'll be having trouble falling asleep 😭
#AmReading the sequel (The Man Who Died Twice) now and loving it. Osman does a great job of making each character feel distinct and human. They react in odd ways sometimes, they're not perfectly predictable! And the mysteries are soooo tasty.

It's bedtime but I don't want to sleep yet because this book is so good!! Osman bounces between many different POVs in a way I could find obnoxious but it's done so well I find it delightful instead. Getting a peek at how all of the disparate people involved both intimately and distantly with the crime think and feel about events is so fun.
I've been waiting weeks for this book to come off hold, really excited to dive in as a few of my trusted book friends have read it and loved it! Of course everyone and their cousin wants to read these books right now so I might have a time of it getting the sequels but we'll see! #AmReading #bookstodon
Finished two books today!
First Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard which is a lesbian sci-fi marriage of convenience story with space pirates and sentient ships.
Then Lord of the White Hell (Book 1) by Ginn Hale which a friend recommend when I asked for fantasy recs bc I've been struggling to get into anything. It was compelling and interesting with just the right level of stakes for me. Starting Book 2 now to wind down for bed.
Juggling a mystery novel, a fantasy novel, a nonfiction book about autism, and a few pages here and there of anything else my brain will let me read. Having my ability to focus on reading come and go is so frustrating 😔 But at least the books are good!
Reading the sequel, Pierced Peony now! I've pinned this thread so I can extend it as I read each book. I'm still finding the pacing very comfortably familiar, and Motts's mannerisms and internal monologue too. I also like that while Motts doesn't always catch allistic subtext or tone, she does often catch that *something* is up, which is so often my experience: something is different but idk what or what it means...

Reading #UnmaskingAutism and ough... my brain is making the laminated paper sound. I'm not even a whole chapter in! Going to have to take this one slow

I'll definitely be reading any sequels to this book. At times the narration can feel abrupt but I find it's abrupt in a comforting, familiar way. The book moves at a pace that fits the way my autistic brain wants narratives to move. Not a lot of time spent on things that aren't relevant. And the MC feels deeply relatable as an autistic person. Comforting as well to read a story about someone who took a long time to move away from home.
I started reading The Appeal by Janice Hallett last night & I'm entranced. It's the kind of book that I'd really like to listen to as I'm reading along, but unfortunately none of my libraries have the audiobook available currently
The narrative is presented with the framing device of two junior lawyers being presented a mountain of sms & email messages to comb through for evidence for a murder trial. I'm 50pgs in and there's already some oddities I'm noticing.

Having finished Project Hail Mary I think... maybe Weir just isn't for me. It wasn't a bad book but it didn't commit in places I really wish it had and I couldn't get past the way it exudes Book Written By A Man from every page. Also the typical plot of this kind of sci-fi which is pretty much everything that could go wrong does drives me up the wall. It's boring after a certain point!
Moving on to Wolf and the Woodsman and hoping it'll be better!
#AmReading #bookstodon
#AmReading Project Hail Mary right now. 44% through and it's really starting to pick up. Do find myself rolling my eyes at some places (you can really tell sometimes that a man wrote this book) but the concepts are interesting so I'm pushing through.
