Given the recent media coverage of rising rents in Madison, I poked around a bit in American Community Survey data. This chart looks at median gross rent, indexes the value to 100 in 2005 (earliest year that it's easy to get ACS data for), and compares Madison with the 50 most populous US cities. Seattle is on top, with rent being 2.2 times in 2021 what it was in 2005. Madison is at 1.6, Detroit 1.4 times.
