A new study in Nature uses ancient DNA from 116 genomes and hundreds of previously published ones to better understand the Gravettian prehistoric culture. In summary the authors teased out there were many small distinct populations that could explain the subtle differences in the archaeological record. anthropology.net/p/european-pr

Some from the linked abovešŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’”

ā€œImportantly, in my view, the term ā€˜genetically similar toā€™ also helps to avoid the assumption of homogeneity within labels; ā€˜similar toā€™ does not imply ā€˜same asā€™. Similarity-based sample descriptors also move us some way to acknowledging the continuous nature of across in our sample descriptions. I am more genetically similar to some samples than I am to others, but that does not imply that there are natural groupings. Nor do similarity-based labels imply how I, as an individual, might choose to identify or what distribution of environments I might experience. For example, a person may be genetically similar to 1000 samples labeled Southern Asian, yet in itself this similarity does not identify them as Southern Asian, whereas stating that a person has ā€˜Southern Asian ā€™ comes much closer to making that linkage in peopleā€™s minds.
Working out the of individuals and of groups of people from around the world is a fascinating area of research, but it should not be the day job of the majority of researchers in the field of , who instead need accurate sample descriptors of current day that aid clear communication.ā€

We extend a method for inferring the spread of a strongly selected allele, originally developed by Novembre et al. (journals.plos.org/plosbiology/). We now incorporate and allow for dynamics.

Using to infer Interesting but
we present genetic data for 13ā€‰Neanderthals from two Middle Palaeolithic sites. Up to 1/3rd of these individualsā€™ genomes had long segments of homozygosity, suggesting that they were part of a small community. Also, the Y-chromosome diversity is an order of magnitude lower than the mitochondrial diversity, a pattern best explained by female migration betwn communities.

Great roundup by John Hawks (who I canā€™t find On Here) on the top 10 stories of 2022. Whatā€™s fascinating to me is how many of these involve non-human DNA, especially of food. johnhawks.net/weblog/the-top-1
