Funerary relief of Apelles from Herakleia ~ c. 110 BCE

Apelles holds a scroll(?) in his left hand and also rests his left foot on a cylinder, while resting his right hand on a herm with a youthful head.

Inscription reads: Ἀπελλῆ Θεμίσωνος / Ἡρακλεῖε χρηστὲ / χαῖρε (this is for ancient Greek fans, I can’t translate Greek!)

🏛 Kunsthistorisches Museum, inv. I 753

The ‘contemplative’ Athena ~ c. 460 BCE

This piece is on my mind after coming across it quite unexpectedly in the Baths of Diocletian. It was a feeling of awe to see this beauty with my own eyes.

🏛 Acropolis Museum (usually, but clearly currently on loan!)

This red-figure amphora offers an ancient spin on the old adage ‘eat a bag of d***s’. Seems like you could also ‘hop in a basket of phalloi’!

Attributed to the Myson Painter, 480-475 BCE

Go bold or go home! This herm is thought to date to c. 520 BCE and the smooth surface of the herm body is perfect for showcasing their particular attribute!

It’s  season!

This armoured owl is ready to take on any foe. They’re our pick to outshine any competition that might be thrown an owl’s way.

The oinochoe dates to the late C5th–early C4th BCE and is thought to be from Athens. The owl was connected with the goddess Athena. A militaristic owl is very much in keeping with Athena’s own military tendencies.

Extensive trade networks existed between the ancient Mediterranean world & Africa, which can be seen in foreign coins, vases and other artifacts found across cities such as Berenike (Greece), Aksum (Ethiopia) & Adulis (Eritrea).

Shown:

(Left) King Aphilas of Axum, Ethiopia depicted on coinage found in ancient Berenike, Greece.

(Right) Roman Wine Amphora, possibly similar to ones identified at Adulis in Eritrea.

A little late on but here’s the beautiful Cinder who we also like to think of as Achilles. She has just one back paw which is golden in colour as though that was where she was held by Thetis and dipped into the Styx.

That's another that censored by not adding it to the tags or serving it to my followers. I think their AI confused the column for something inappropriate. Oh well.
