I see that the Angel of the North has just turned 25. Five years ago, I wrote an article for The Journal and the Right Lines website (https://rightlines.info/2018/03/01/an-angel-beckoned) about my memories of its arrival. Pretty much every word still stands today (and I've still only stopped to wander up to it once).

New from Instagram: Whenever I got back I up north to see family and friends, I always look for the Angel. Happy 25th birthday.
The #AngelofTheNorth is 25 years old today. From my #artjournal in 2008. "Today I read about the guy who crossed the channel with a wing and some jet engines strapped to his back. I saw a glider soar above a swarm of model aircraft buzzing over the A1. Then a flock of lapwings fluttered up on high like giant handfuls of black and white confetti. It felt as it was calling to us, sending emissaries to hurry us on our way. My 'pilgrimage' made me alive to everything in the sky.
And then you arrive and discover that the sculpture is rooted in concrete with piles as deep as it is high. But it is still a creature of the air. Not cold and distant, in splendid isolation, but surrounded by mothers and lovers, clambered over by kids, and crawled upon by one tiny caterpillar. Transcending industrial brutalization and lifting us all with its wings." 27.09.08
The emblematic #AngelOfTheNorth signals to travellers on the A1 and the East Coast Main Line that they are arriving on #Tyneside. It was installed at its @gateshead home 25 years ago today. It was created by Antony Gormley.

"Antony Gormley's Angel of the North, completed in February 1998.
20 metres tall, near the A1 in Gateshead, it dominates the skyline and has become a symbol of home for many Geordies. Made from 200 tonnes of steel, it has a wingspan of 54 metres and a red-brown colour that comes from the weathering steel which can withstand winds of more than 100 miles per hour."
