The sea ice around #Antarctica is reaching a record low by a wide margin!
🔴 There is about 2.6 million square kilometers of Antarctic sea ice loss
🟠 It can slow the Earth’s deep-ocean conveyor belt
🟡 This could also affect marine life at depth

"We're talking about sea ice, which is frozen seawater, that — and that ice grows every year from the periphery of #Antarctica outwards.
That growth of that sea ice is so massive, it doubles the size of the continent every single year.
But the problem is, is that, this year and last year, ... that ice has not been growing nearly as quickly. ...
It is a marked difference. That is roughly the size of Alaska that is missing ice now in the Southern Ocean."
The news of Antarctic sea ice melting are hitting me hard today. Let's say "sea ice" was my special interest for a long time.
I studied sea ice on my PhD, and the beauty of the ice was one of the things that kept me going. Sea ice is so beautiful.
I have a bittersweet relationship with the topic because academia was an unfriendly environment for me. Plus the cognitive dissonance of contributing to climate change while studying Arctic ice. So I stopped working /thinking about it
Now the Antarctic sea ice is melting, people are talking about it, and it is bringing me memories of when the Arctic ice started going haywire 15 years ago. This morning I could not hold it anymore. It's so painful. Such a beautiful thing going away.
I have so much grieving to do here.
I plead for #ClimateAction

#climate #climatechange #climatewarming Meltwater is hydro-fracking #Greenland’s #ice sheet through millions of hairline cracks – destabilizing its internal structure. Melting is faster than earlier known, also in #Antarctica, because of reasons, we first now start to understand. #TheConversation https://theconversation.com/meltwater-is-hydro-fracking-greenlands-ice-sheet-through-millions-of-hairline-cracks-destabilizing-its-internal-structure-207468
