Very well written explainer. I would only suggest a couple of adjustments:

"China’s Communist Party and its minions who run Hong Kong cannot stand the sight of people expressing their preferences for who should lead them."

--> "... preferences for who should *represent* them."

"...electoral rules were changed so that only those loyal to China were allowed to run for office."

--> "..only those loyal to *the never-elected CCP dictatorship* were allowed..." (many of the jailed were pro-China but anti-dictatorship)

Isn't the question now that #HongKong's civil liberties and "#Hongkongers ruling Hong Kong" have been eradicated, *why* should democracies continue treating that "#CCP's banking colony" as legally and financially separate territory from the #PRC?

The health of #democracy and #HumanRights in #SoutheastAsia is inversely related to the power of the giant neighbouring #dictatorship which the world's democracies — lead by their bankers and industrialists — have been feeding for the last several decades.

Also, blatant #hypocrisy is seldom a winning strategy anywhere. If values and principles are up for sale, the rest is merely about haggling over price.
