After the #Arab invasion of #Spain in 711, repressive #Christian laws on #homosexuality - which prescribed punishments such as castration - were replaced by a #Muslim rule of 700 years of intellectual, religious and sexual tolerance. Culturally, Islam was far more open in this period and began to view homosexuality in medical terms, rather than sin, long before Europeans. It was freely discussed and, at times, openly practised.
