However, I keep seeing anecdotes of people having positive mental health outcomes after interacting with these AI chat bots.

Who would have thought the frontier of computing would lead to automation in emotional labor? Maybe AI will enable super low-cost counseling, maybe like a "life coach." It could even work with human therapists to provide supplemental services.

However, maybe an AI counselor could be used to shape public opinion or collect mass amounts of personal data.

I think the moral of this story is that we're going to need to have some intervention outside of the tech world. If GPT is going to act like a therapist, then it should be held to the standards we hold to therapists.
