Wang Bing's "Til madness do us part" (2013) is an exceptional document on China's mental asylums, and the sometimes arbitrary reasons for people's detention. It's not an easy watch but essential.

"Inside the yellow cocoon shell" by Vietnamese director Pham Thien An played at this year's Quinzaine and won the Canera d'Or. It's a three-hour long spiritual journey through the director's country, and the trailer gives me a Bi Gan / Apichatpong Weerasethakul feel.

The Cannes Film Festival has added a new short film by Portuguese director Pedro Costa (Horse Money) to its line-up: Filles du Feu.

That makes it 3 big Slow Cinema names for Cannes: besides Costa, there will also be two new films by Wang Bing and the latest by Lisandro Alonso.

More info on one of the two new Wang Bing films: Man in Black (2023), to be screened in Cannes.

"The 60-minute film, which will debut as a special screening, is a portrait of 86-year-old Wang Xilin, one of China’s most important modern classical composers and is now lives in exile in Germany."
