#NASA officials sound alarm over future of the #DeepSpaceNetwork. #DSN, a collection of antennas in California, Spain, and Australia maintain contact with missions scattered across #SolarSystem.
"I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to put up #CubeSats with #ArtemisI." 8 CubeSats were tracked with DSN. But limited resources and only so many antennas, DSN had to turn away from NASA's other science missions to focus on #Orion #spacecraft and CubeSats flying with it. https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/08/nasas-artemis-i-mission-nearly-broke-the-deep-space-network/

As we savor the success of #ArtemisI, I’m rudely reminded that the US is dependent on #SpaceX to land humans on the moon, ostensibly in 2025.
We should never have abandoned public funding for space launch platforms. Ceding such a strategic piece to civilian profit was unwise.

Now that the uncrewed #ArtemisI #Moon mission has concluded, what’s next?
The #ArtemisII mission is planned for a May 2024 launch and will be the second flight of the #Artemis program. It is aiming to be the first mission to carry humans to the Moon’s vicinity since 1972's #Apollo17.

December 11, 2022: The #ArtemisI test flight to the #Moon has concluded and has returned to #Earth.
December 11, 1972 (50 years ago): #Apollo17 landed on the lunar surface. The mission brought the #Apollo program to its apex, and it remains the most recent instance of humans setting foot on the Moon.

Congratulations to everyone involved on the successful completion of the #ArtemisI mission! This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team, and a historic milestone for #Space exploration. The #Moon holds many mysteries and secrets, and this mission has brought us one step closer to unlocking them. This is an exciting time for #Science and #Discovery, and we can't wait to see what new insights and discoveries the #Artemis mission will bring. Well done, team!

Splashdown! #ArtemisI returns. Watching the speed and distance change over the last hour of the mission was pretty awesome. That must be an amazing ride.
The #Orion spacecraft has returned to #Earth with a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. This marks the end of its mission and the beginning of new opportunities for space exploration. Congratulations to the team that make up #ArtemisI!
