Guillia Camply of @rmwaterhouse lab about genes in . The most diverse group shares the trait of moulting. We can see it in the fossils record and every where around us but it is largely understudied. Trying to understand the history and the diversity of gene families and expression of this trait around all arthropods. Doing exceptional work of comparing between 150 proteomes and 65 gene families. How do change occur in arthropoda?

New research: in (2019-2020) killed at least 60 billion , and perhaps up to 120 trillion (!!!) if and are included.

Destruction of this community has effects on , which affects stand .

It’s easy to forget all these tiny , but we should expect more of them as and fire interact to accelerate loss.

I've been going into my deep archives and finding lifeforms I never uploaded to iNat.
Here's one from 2009.

For check out this cutie pie - this is a ~525 million year old , that may be an early relative of today's (scale bars 1/10 mm). If you've not heard of them, tardigrades - or water bears - are beautiful, minute . They are closely related to (arachnids, insects, millipedes, crustaceans and kin). This cool little fossil has three leg pairs, with tiny claws.

Do you ever consider the abundance of right under your feet?

This new study (Rosenberg et al. 2023) estimates that there are ~200 million metric tons of in the , and ~300 million metric tons (dry weight!) of arthropods in total in .

That's as much as all and our combined.

Check it out here:

For meet Mongolarachne, a gorgeous - and at ~8.5 cm long including its legs, unusually large - fossil from ~170 million year old rocks in China. This was originally considered a member of a living genus, Nephila.

Lesser grass jewel (Zizina otis).

A diminutive, low flying butterfly of open country, and grassland, it settles frequently on low growing flowers.

For check out this gorgeous ! This 49 million year old beauty is Pulchritudo attenboroughi, a found in the rocks of the Green River Formation, Colorado. what's particularly striking about this fossil is the pattern on its wing cases.
