We can see it in the fossils record and every where around us but it is largely understudied. Trying to understand the history and the diversity of gene families and expression of this trait around all arthropods. Doing exceptional work of comparing between 150 proteomes and 65 gene families. New research: #fires in #Australia (2019-2020) killed at least 60 billion #leaf #litter #arthropods, and perhaps up to 120 trillion (!!!) if #mites and #springtails are included.
Destruction of this community has effects on #decomposition, which affects stand #recovery.
It’s easy to forget all these tiny #deaths, but we should expect more of them as #ClimateChange and fire interact to accelerate #biodiversity loss.

For #FossilFriday check out this cutie pie - this is a ~525 million year old #fossil, that may be an early relative of today's #tardigrades (scale bars 1/10 mm). If you've not heard of them, tardigrades - or water bears - are beautiful, minute #animals. They are closely related to #arthropods (arachnids, insects, millipedes, crustaceans and kin). This cool little fossil has three leg pairs, with tiny claws.

This new study (Rosenberg et al. 2023) estimates that there are ~200 million metric tons of #arthropods in the #soil, and ~300 million metric tons (dry weight!) of arthropods in total in #terrestrial #habitats #world #wide.
That's as much as all #humans and our #farm #animals combined.

For #FossilFriday meet Mongolarachne, a gorgeous - and at ~8.5 cm long including its legs, unusually large - fossil #spider from ~170 million year old rocks in China. This was originally considered a member of a living genus, Nephila.

For #FossilFriday check out this gorgeous #fossil #insect! This 49 million year old beauty is Pulchritudo attenboroughi, a #beetle found in the rocks of the Green River Formation, Colorado. what's particularly striking about this fossil is the pattern on its wing cases.
