Venus and the Moon this morning.

By measures of astrophotographic quality, this one is pretty meh. It's noisy, it's a little fuzzy, the tree in the foreground looks like an expressionist did it, same with the house...

...but I showed it to my wife, who thought the inadvertent light painting on the tree looked really cool and the whole thing was aesthetically good.

So one for "art" today, as opposed to "science."

Asteroid hit by NASA spacecraft is behaving unexpectedly

When NASA crashed its DART spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos, the goal was to shorten the space rock's orbit around its parent asteroid. The mission succeeded - but Dimorphos' orbit has continued to shrink and it isn't clear why

Comet Nishimura. Latest estimates of the comet's brightness place it at magnitude +4.5. In a dark sky, this would be visible to the unaided eye, but the morning sky is not dark, so maybe cameras could be required to pluck the comet from the twilight of dawn. The mornings ahead will be more difficult. Comet Nishimura is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter inside the orbit of Mercury on Sept. 17th. Increasing glare will challenge astrophotographers.

Seem a few posts on satellites (especially starlink) and light pollution, but would anyone mind please explaining why satellites need lights on them at all?

Random thought.

Inasmuch as there is very limited scientific benefit from visual - all the real data is through various forms of astro-imaging - I still love the IDEA of visual astronomy.

Why? It's the photons.

Think on it: if you're looking directly at a star - even through a telescope - the photons from that star, trillions of miles away, are finally ending their journey ON YOUR RETINA - Not on a sensor, to be studied later.

That's a purely visceral thing, but there it is.

Our understanding of the universe is getting deeper but also more uncomfortable. Galaxies formed too soon. The expansion rate of the universe differs depending on how we measure it. Gravity may work in weird ways.

Yeah we're not even close to being done figuring it all out. Good piece here.

I spent the evening teaching my neighborhood snooks squad about my Dobsonian Telescope, looking at Saturn and the Moon and watched a three year old's eyes/face light up when she saw Saturn for the first time.

What a gift of an evening!
