I cannot in good faith recommend that anyone sign a contract through ACX to be paid in whole or in part in royalties because ACX/Audible is prepared to take down audiobooks without warning to narrators and leave us no recourse to be paid for our work.

I'm horrified that this is the outcome of my case. Please avoid this situation for yourselves.

One nice little side effect of being a narrator who narrates & promotes books for multiple authors is the breadth of my collection can sometimes serve as a lift for all my authors: when listeners like my voice, they tend to buy books right across my catalogue. It's a privilege to work with writers & I'm thrilled to support them any way I can.

As an audiobook narrator, my first audience is the author. They sign off on the work or they don't! My job is to give the best performance I can within the author's instructions. But more than that, this is their writing & I want them to feel happy as an artist & as a business person with the audio version of their work.

I got an email from a company that does text to speech and offers "premium tts audiobooks". They offered me a partnership. Me, the person who constantly gushes about narrators! The person who wrote a long rant about AI voices! I think that's gutsy 😄

(I got odd vibes, so I don't expect much to come of it. They didn't seem to appreciate what makes an audiobook. But I will take a closer look because they have potential at making certain books more accessible.)

Working up character voices as an audiobook narrator is much like casting a play or film: it's important that the voices contrast across the book in general and most important they contrast with characters in the same scenes.
