@pixelbud Story Time:
During my IGCSE we'd practice for the English listening exam in either the classroom or a projector room that has carpeting.
While in the carpeted room I'd do great, parsing about 90% of what I hear. The classroom was a little bit echo-y (reverb) and I could barely hear anything coming out of that cassette player, it was all nmmnnmnmnnn to me, I look around and my colleagues are hearing and writing down like it's nothing, they felt like aliens!

I just realized why I hate when everyone around me seems to love it: it fucks with my .

I didn't realize until I was forced to WFH in 2020 just how much I rely on to function: everything from assessing how hard I'm supposed to be working based on the people around me, to remembering to each lunch. I'm much better at conversation IRL - being on the phone constantly with people whose lips I can't see messes with my , which makes me more socially anxious, which makes it harder to focus and retain information. It threw off the daily routine I was precariously managing. I can't just copy the emotional reactions of everyone around me = I don't know what the "appropriate" emotional reactions are for situations = I just default to constant anxiety.

I feel bad because so many folks really prefer but I selfishly want y'all to come back to the office so I can unfuck my life 😩 Am I alone here, @actuallyautistic ?

Hey all! I have early stage hearing loss and trouble processing speech when I get tired.
When I have to do a lot of Zoom calls or Discord or similar I find that I get super emotionally volatile and frustrated from straining to hear and having to ask people to repeat themselves over... and over... and over...

Does anybody have tips on how to cope/self-soothe? It makes me feel really powerless and isolated and angry.

I was today years old when I discovered I've lived a lifetime of this. I was held back in school when I was 6 years old which removed me from my peer group. I got tired of asking people to repeat something they've said and watching them get angry b/c I didn't understand. I can't watch TV/movies without subs. It's impossible for me to talk to someone in a poorly lit room b/c I can't see their lips. I've had hearing tests that show some loss, but this info is new to me.

I have no idea if this is related to lmao but I'm beginning to think I might have some of this going on because most of the time I can't hear what someone is saying unless I'm focusing on their voice. like if it's out of nowhere I hear the sound but somehow I can't understand what was said. also can't comprehend with background noise etc. but it has gifted us with many laughs since it happened lol

Really enjoyed her artwork, which featured on her slides 🥰

(Unfortunately, I don’t have permission to share content from the conference)

She’s also just talking (in Q&A) about the difficulty of accessing healthcare, especially crisis services, by phone – given situational mutism and auditory processing disorder

Ironic to have a prerecorded talk on auditory processing and the Autistic profile, where the speaker (Bec Poulsen) is barely visible, making it hard to follow!

@HopeGraceFury
My experience is very similar. 😊

I've asked family before to say something to get my attention & make sure they've got it, first, instead of just starting in on what they want to say.

Because I will lose the first 1-2 sentences before my brain catches up to the fact that it needs to "hear" in a *meaningful-sounds-that-bear-interpretation way*, now.

I spent a long time with before diagnosis.

It's so surreal to realize how firmly in the "hearing" world I'm perceived to be, while experiencing near constant anxiety that I won't hear/understand important parts of interactions, which still happens a lot, even with my

from land

Squatch the Spousal Unit is in the other room, and I think he might be talking to me, but nothing I can make out.

He comes around the corner, and, before I can ask, I realize he's singing 🎶 I got a pop tart, I found a pop tart, I didn't know I had🎶

And, yes, he was absolutely doing a little dancey dance. I will never get used to this.

Someone giving me a long list of verbal instructions might as well be speaking Klingon because I'd probably understand them better. 😅

My ears feel weird.. sort of mucky? I'm hoping that I'm not getting sick with a sinus infection or ear infection, or something.

I've had my air conditioning and fan on over the last few nights, and I'm wondering if my ears are just feeling weird because my brain is trying to process the auditory overwhelm from the constant noise.

@leigh Hi! Fellow person, I use JBL660 headphones, much better battery than AirPodPro, and good filtering settings. I’ve considered hearing aids but they are way more expensive and I only use them in busy places. Less often out and about these days. If you get hearing aids I’m interested in your experience!

Lots of us watch videos or listen to podcasts at 2x speed, right? This seems to be a pretty well known thing. Less than 1.75 just always seems too slow for me.

But this is only true when someone is speaking normally. If someone is reading from a script, it sounds completely unnatural to me, and I can't process it all, even at normal speed, unless I concentrate exceptionally hard.

Someone suggested that maybe it's that the average person isn't very good at reading aloud, but I don't think it's that. Even top-rated audiobooks are also entirely impossible to listen to.

Doe anyone else relate to any of this, or have any pointers to anything where I could learn more? I've read some stuff on , but most of that doesn't apply to me, and I'm struggling to find anything else related.

One clue seems to be that stand-up comedy seems to work, even though that's mostly scripted. I don't really know what the difference is, but my guess would be that they work hard at making it sound natural, whereas most people reading speak in a different manner. But I don't have the vocabulary for describing any of this, so don't know how to google for more.

So I discovered that ToonTown Rewritten runs on my decade-old laptop. The team leading it is making some great decisions and more folks should take a peek. I can choose my (despite having the classic clothing shape binary choice). The sound effects are separated from the music. I can toggle certain sound effects off individually. There’s a visual indicator for sound. I can remap all of my controls and they’ve got experimental controller support. Like so many features in a game that was rebirthed by the community and by most accounts, shouldn’t exist that are too often missing from AAA games.
.
This is an interesting thing I’ve noticed. I remember older games having more robust settings which at some point fell out of vogue. I’m often thinking of specific discrete sound settings as thats where one of my features intersects with . I can remember early console games that had a multitude of sliders for different sounds which meant I could turn down the triggery ones and boost the ones that my filters out. Or remapping and awkward keyboard reach because my hands have always seemed to move differently than how folks wanted to teach me (I type over 100WPM with 98.8% accuracy using my weird typing technique; different isn’t wrong!).
.
Now I’m curious: what games have ‘unusual’ settings or features that make your gaming experience better? Do you have memories of games that got it right?

@considermycatjohn I was too

Anything referencing or went completely over my head

But then (probably because of my ) I pretty much ignored the fact that songs had words, unless I happened to read the lyrics on the sleeve of a record I owned

(Even then, I almost certainly missed a lot)

I did (and still do) like Erasure though 😊
