We had a visit from an Australia Magpie the other day. There's a family of at least 6 that live around here, and it's great to see them up close.
I've previously mentioned their liquid, burbly song, so different to the song of any other bird around. Truly awesome birds!
I think this one was looking up toward the gum trees on the hill behind the house - they often fly up there, maybe that's their roost...

Happy Friday!
This morning our resident Swamp Wallaby was in the backyard and was so engaged with nibbling tasty grass that I managed to leave the house and take the car out without it hopping away. This also meant I got a few photos too.
Then, upon getting to work, I found the White Magpie again. Clearly a good day for wildlife.

The last time I saw the Wrong Magpie was in Gavin Bishop's otherwise excellent children's book, Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story. An #AustralianMagpie showed up in the page on World War I. Some NZ and Australian soldiers in the trenches kept magpies as pets. Spoiler alert: it's the Wrong Magpie. #NaturalHistoryBlooper #birds

The Wrong Magpie returns! A featured story today on #RNZ is a great story about Australia-based wildlife biologist Grainne Cleary. But is that really an #AustralianMagpie, as RNZ's photo caption claims? Of course not. It's a #EurasianMagpie! It doesn’t look like an Aussie magpie, because it's not even in the same bird Family. A hint was that the Flickr caption was in German. #NaturalHistoryBlooper #birds

Our friendly magpie was back today, foraging for worms and bugs in the backyard, with a new friend, a Pied Currawong.
They seemed to get along ok together.
