I looked outside our back door and found the Cat's whiskers, which had been drooping and looking rather sad lately, have suddenly brightened up!

@GreenMazza I love the grasstree. it's so easy to collect the seed and they grow so well in pots and can handle long periods of without water. Like when you go on holidays and forget to have someone water your plants. I grew these 3 from seed then left them in pots for about 10 years. When I moved to this place 4 years ago I planted them above a rockwall. They have taken off. They really love rocky ground and volcanic soils. These do not show any signs of developing a trunk so I guess they are the gracilus variety. I attended Griffith University in Brisbane and the Toohey forest around there is full of them.

Pittosporum revolutum is a shrub commonly found in moist, sheltered areas along the east coast. The young leaves light up this otherwise unassuming plant with showy rusty hairs, which become glabrous as they age.

Viva la P. revolutum!

This is the view along my rear boundary. My property had been rented for many years and was not cared for. Only the back along the boundary looked any good. It was all planted with natives, clear of weeds and well kept. It turned out that my neighbour took it upon himself to keep it that way as a firebreak and I suspect because he had run out of room on his own land to plant more natives.
The easement is owned by the water company who do absolutely no upkeep. Other parts are overgrown with Blackberry and weeds.
The third picture is of a silky oak (Grevillia Robusta) that he planted 4 or 5 years ago under a grey gum. It's reaching sideways for more sun. If you're looking for Australian native trees that are not Gum trees then Silky Oaks make a great choice.

The trick is to identify the stalk, usually very young eucalypt seedlings will have a redish stalk, then look at the leaves, pluck one and see if you can smell the eucalyptus oil.

If you find one growing wild, and its in a good spot, not too close to the house, then weed around it, maybe lay down some mulch and put it a stake with a ribbon close by to avoid stepping on it or running over it with the lawnmower or brush cutter. But keep weeding around it to give it room.
here's one barely 6 inches high, I might have to transplant it away from the house.

This one here started to sprout after a couple of other gum trees fell over. Now about 1.5 metres tall. In the centre foreground. Just behind near the fence is an acacia that also just grew by itself.

Now let me tell you how dumb I am. I tried to kill this little fella here because I thought it was a succulent weed. the leaves were so thick and waxy. So I sprayed it with roundup. But he wouldn't die. Now it's grown a bit it is obviously some kind of eucalypt. I got no idea what. But it loves the shade and the water. It orginally started to grow over a burst water main. I'll have to keep it pruned because it's under power lines and right next to the driveway.

The smaller one is another of the same species that has also decided to grow in an awkward spot. I'll have to transplant it.
