@qlp Family 'should' be those to whom you can confide, but I have found it is the opposite. My parents were of the 'get over it' age. My sibs were no more receptive to any tale of woe...and still aren't.
No wonder late-dxed autists are reticent. We're forced into keeping everything bottled up, even once we know why we're such odd ducks. I have 'found' my people online, most especially here on Mastodon. The #AutisticCommunity is receptive, and welcoming to #ActuallyAutistic, #AuDHD, and #Neurodivergent folk. A week on since my doctor agreed to refer me for an #autism assessment, I’m still processing what this means. I’ve told my work and some select friends but I’m not ready to tell my family yet. Not until I know what the future holds.

I suspect that the #AutisticCommunity here on Masto will prove invaluable over time. A shame that my writing has dried up but I have a lot of reading to do about my own mental health so it’ll have to wait.

A reminder for parents of #autistic kids: If you want to understand your child's experiences and provide the support they need, one of your best resources is the online #AutisticCommunity. Medical professionals and other non-autistic parents can never give you an inside view of what it's like to be us, what we need, how we think, or what we feel. Talk to #AutisticAdults to understand your #AutisticChild.

#AutismResearch has done its course in my life, it was only Neurodiversity that made #Autism make any sense at all to me.

Actually before I even heard that word "Neurodiversity" I met very #neurodiverse individuals in the #AutisticCommunity.

#FaceToFace I met them. I had to determine myself if Autism was a real thing or not. #ItWasReal and #ItIsReal!

Personal encounters with many individuals fueled my #interest in autism and as I met more and more I started to be able to identify neurotypes.
Everything starts with "is this person like me? Why or why not? In which ways is this person like me and in which ways is this person not like me? Does this person think like me or just happens they now have some similar interests but interests come and go right?".

When you think you are an #explorer.

"Person A reminded me about person S whom I met at that other autism encounter if I remember, hmm" and then "Person G also reminds me about person A".

When I got #diagnosed there was nothing really special about the #diagnosis aside from them finding that I belong to a #SpectrumOfNeurotypes #Neurotypes.

The current #science though lacks the ability to tell what #neurotype I am, which is bad! My unique #Neurotype is #unknown.

#Science is about expanding #knowledge and apparently there is #NoKnowledge about this yet.
Just #theories and we don't even know who is out there with a #TreasureTrove of #UnsharedTheories.

We in the #NeurodiversityMovement are the #LastHope to find them a solution and find us(#humanity) a solution to #ExpandNeurodiversity. #Neurodiversity.

The Neurodiversity movement's stepping stone is neurotypes and the lack of knowledge in that area is #alarming, makes us weaker.

Hope escapes us last though.

I have hope and belief in that the Neurodiversity Movement is going to find a way, some of you #Thinkers out there will find a solution one day which we are all gonna enjoy.

@ReimanSaara Agree with this. I see it played out at the Book Club, it really doesn't come up (unless necessary) what people 'do', it doesn't really matter. It's what people think that we care about.

It's fascinating because with NT's one of the first things they ask is 'What do you do?' so they can pigeon hole you in the hierarchy.

I have a To-Do List which I’m not going to complete before the op.

‘Paint & Tidy entire house’ isn’t going to be achievable in 4 weeks. This is stressing me.

There is a lot written about #ChronicIllness in the #AutisticCommunity but not so much about surgery.

I fear that talking about this will be seen as a ‘downer’ but I want to be authentic.

I’m always telling others not to feel like they’re ‘Too Much’, but here I am, feeling like I’m ‘too much’.

I couldn’t actually find a book club on Fable that is for #ActuallyAutistic members and is #BIPOC but that doesn’t mean there isn’t another one!

There is such a lack of free support for the #ActuallyAutistic community, let alone BIPOC #autistics I can only hope there will be dozens of Book clubs (and other kinds of clubs) for us soon!

@JurassNic It would be interesting for me to know if anyone else was like me?

Unlike so many others I did not attract a group of undiagnosed neurodivergent friends, instead I battled through neurotypical friendships that crashed & burned. This made me feel so broken and 'odd', it was very distressing.

I think that's why I love the #AutisticCommunity so much, because when I finally met other #Autistic people, it was like coming home!

@btaroli @actuallyautistic I find it really hard to articulate things sometimes, I know what I want to say, but when I put it into words it sometimes communicates a different meaning.

What I guess I feel uncomfortable with, is the emerging appearance of hierarchy within the #AutisticCommunity (Maybe I'm imagining it, Idk...!)

It isn't about pulling anyone down, but raising all #Autistics up?

I think that's what I'm trying to say!

You're right, there are so many of us! Especially within the #AutisticCommunity

I also prefer #SameFoods and a strict routine. After #Anorexia and #DisorderedEating I have found what works for me, and like you, I don't eat the same as my family anymore and no-one has a problem with it!

@TeacherGriff @Supposenot @actuallyautistic #AutisticCommunity of 'The Looming Deadline'. If we have a 'looming deadline' we cannot think about anything else!

If the child knows they have to return to education in 6 months, there will be no rest, because the deadline is barrelling down towards them.

The best thing you can do is say, 'Rest, recuperate, recover' let them find out who they are and what they want to do. This may look 'unproductive' from the outside, but they are healing.

But Mastodon, more so than the other place, is allowing me to connect with others of my #AutisticCommunity for which I am very grateful.

I have never felt so free to share my thoughts as I do here, and amazingly people respond, which has been so touching.
