Today in Labor History February 28, 1525: Hernan Cortes executed Cuauhtémoc , king of the Aztecs. Bernal Diaz del Castillo wrote in his journal that it was an unjust execution, that there was no evidence the Cuauhtémoc was plotting against Cortes. Cuauhtémoc said, through his interpreter, La Malinche, “Now I understand your false promises and the kind of death you have had in store for me. For you are killing me unjustly. May God demand justice from you, as it was taken from me when I entrusted myself to you in my city of Mexico!”

This chap is Ixtlilton, Aztec god of medicine, dances , festivals and games. He would visit young children in their beds at night and bring them a good night's sleep.
So if you can’t sleep, you can blame Ixtlilton. Or just stop looking at your phone in bed. Put it down!

Can you see the lady here? Aztec legends say that Iztaccíhuatl, a princess who died grief-stricken after losing her love, was slowly transformed into this snow-peaked mountain, found today in Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park.
Her lover is also found nearby, a raging volcano. Hear the full story of Iztaccíhuatl and her love in the Mexico episode of History Happened Everywhere.

There were no horses in prehispanic #Mexico , but the Mexica (“ #Aztec ”) Empire (1428-1521 AD) had a network of “painani”, elite relay runners, who could convey messages and deliver goods. The painani would run a distance of almost 400 kms. to bring the first catch of the morning from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City), through high mountain ranges, so the Huēi Tlahtoāni (great speaker or Emperor) could eat fresh fish every day.

During 250 years, the Philippines and New Spain (nowadays #Mexico ) were connected through the #Acapulco /Manila galleon. Unsurprisingly this century-old link left many marks on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, e.g. there are a number of words in #Tagalog adopted from #Nahuatl (“ #Aztec ”) language through Mexican Spanish and which are still very much in use. Some of them are presented in the picture below.
