The #Biden admin has asked the #US #Congress to authorise another $20 billion in support for #Ukraine. Most of the money would be spent on military aid. Since #Russia 's full-scale #invasion began 18 mthss ago, Washington has given well over a $100 billion to Ukraine's #war effort. A US government official said such support would continue for as long as necessary. Some Republicans in Congress have indicated that they'll oppose continued funding.

A #Russian-installed official says Ukrainian forces have damaged two bridges linking the occupied region of #Kherson to #Crimea . Vladimir Saldo claimed Storm Shadow missiles were used in the attacks. They're advanced, long-range weapons given to #Ukraine by its Western allies. Saldo posted pictures showing huge holes in the #Chonhar Bridge. He said 12 missiles were fired in total but nine were shot down. Traffic has been diverted much further westwards.

The banking giant #HSBC says its #profits have more than #doubled as it benefited from rising #interest #rates around the world. Europe's largest bank reported profits before tax of almost $22 billion - up nearly13 billion dollars on the same time a year earlier. The lender also saw its profits further boosted from its purchase of the UK arm of the now-defunct Silicon Valley Bank, which it bought in March for just over a dollar.

The West African regional body, #ECOWAS has described the detention of the leader of #Niger by members of his presidential guard as an attempted #coup . The group said it condemned in the strongest possible terms an attempt to seize power by force from President Mohamed #Bazoum . A statement from Niger's presidency said Mr Bazoum and his family were well; it added that the army would attack the presidential guard troops if they did not withdraw. (cont.)
