Years after I lost my a friend (♥️) found one in a thrift store and sent it to me by mail. The German language version of the Red Box. Looks brand new, like a message in a bottle straight from the 80s. It just arrived. Hello, old friend. You‘ve been missed. Red Box coming home.

05) OLDEST game you've played?
, pardon?!
? Strange question. ?

Oldest ?

Most people will answer . Without information about the edition or variant, it is probably not very informative. Wasn't the darling a ripoff/clone of ? ?
I must have played one of these old versions once. Don't care much.
I answer (5e?, end of the 70s? ). BTW: In my opinion, the core of didn't change much over the decades/editions...

No pictures from HATE this week unfortunately, as apparently the box-daemon had run out of pink.

Busy night though, lots of Age Of Sigmar and 10e 40K. Some Necromunda too. Your humble reporter played in a session zero &D game with 6 other players, which was great. We're in the Grand Duchy Of and are about to travel downriver to pick up some prize horses for the Ylaruam ambassador.

@deidungeon The called was based on an actual campaign. Interestingly, it later became a on its own. Yes, it's one of my favorite RPG-related cartoons.

The first set of books I had were the AD&D Player’s Guide, GM Guide, and the In Search of Adventure book which collected modules B1-9. (It would take me years to realize technically those adventures were written for a different system.)

In the introduction it gave possible ways to turn the previously disconnected modules into a campaign.

Published 1987.

Bedtime reading with one of my favourite books.

I started playing in the 80s with and but is the edition I feel most at home with.

I thought the cover of Lost Omens Legends was reminiscent of the old Gazetteers.

New Site Post: Old-School Essentials as a D&D alternative to D&D
spriggans-den.com/2023/03/02/o

I've seen a lot of people voicing unhappiness with D&D being combat heavy and sometimes turning into a dull slog. I think many of these exact issues have been a solved problem for over 42 years and OSE could be an alternative system that people should really look into.

A while back I tried to write an article on what makes such a great game but couldn't get it reasonably short where anyone would read past the opening.

But in just the last week, I've seen a youtube video, a long forum post, and a Mastodon post on narrative issues with how approaches combat, and each time I was thinkig "B/X had solved exactly this problem 42 years ago!"

I think I really need to go doing some mossionizing on why people should learn OSE.

post #2. Maybe it's a holdover from my line of work (classical music) but I've been wrestling w/ "historical performance practice"-- e.g., what it means to give my D&D camp kids an authentic "old school" experience. If you sidestep the quirky bits (d6 skills, wonky saving throws, turn-based exploring, resource management, etc.) is it *really* Basic D&D? I know it should always be about fun and creativity, but as an old guy it's hard not to pursue an ideal. Anyone else?

The old adventures "The Isle of Dread", "Quagmire!", and "Journey to the Rock" range from amazingly evocative, to mediocre, to really bad. But they keep being hugely inspirational for my own setting and the next campaign I am working on. They got this really weird blend of D&D and the Hyborian Age, which I really like.

So let's talk d6 skills in Basic, , , , etc. So, if roll-under ability scores are part of your game, do you bother with, say, d6 OPEN DOORS? How do you reconcile something so specific, or do you use OPEN DOORS as a substitute for all strength-based checks? Do you make a distinction between the thief ability MOVE SILENTLY and an attempt (DEX check) by non-thieves to move QUIETLY? I'm very curious how old-school devotees make sense of the d6 quirks.

The Save vs. Wands in / ... fiddly, for sure. I found this a while back-- a reference to a statement by Gary Gygax: "Gygax stated that save vs. wands was usually an act of physically dodging, while save vs. spells was mental resistance and, for magic-users who have much better save vs. spells than other classes, a bit of counterspell." I can't find the quote anywhere. Thoughts?

Bin wohl "kein Mainstream".
Enjoy.
