It's based on Hans Christian Andersen's most depressing story, about a girl who freezes to death on New Year's Eve. Lang wanted something on the scale of #Bach's St Matthew Passion but was secular instead of religious. The piece is austere, chilling (really, a lot of Lang's choral pieces are like that), and beautiful.
