The section of Brecon & Merthyr Railway between Bargoed and 'Pontsticill was one of contrasts.

From a steep sided mining valley it emerged onto the windswept heads of the valleys area and finally into the Brecon Beacons.

A profile of the Brecon and Merthyr Railway as it passes through different landscapes in its middle section.

For historical and locomotive information about the railway, however, you will need to also buy Book 1.

A portrait of locations and industries along the middle section of the Brecon and Merthyr Railway, mainly from the 1950s and 1960s.

Beware, though, that you miss out on some material which is only in the first book.

Long with detailed diagrams, this book contains handy overall maps, including one showing the sequence of line closures.

Beware, though, that as the book follows the Rhymney Valley towards Machen, neither the Darran valley nor Rhymney Railway south of Pengam are shown.

The first part of this book features Bargoed station and the junction of the Rhymney Railway with the Brecon and Merthyr to the north.

As the line climbs out of the Darran Valley the photographs well illustrate the isolated halts which existed on a bleak part of the Heads of the Valleys
