The #playoffs are brutal and brilliant in equal measure. Really, really felt for #Barnsley after being so resilient with ten men for such a long time. They deserved pens. So near and yet so far.

Lovely morning for a walk with the pooch. Nice and crisp underfoot so no muddy paws and belly to deal with today. The lake in the valley has a thin film of ice over it. Thick enough for the geese but I suspect not for the swans.

Redfearn Brothers was set up in 1862 by two brothers and became a company in 1910. Originally located by the Canal at Old Mill, the site at Monk Bretton was opened in 1946. With six separate furnaces and employing over 1800 people, the site was at one time said to be the largest glassworks in Europe. Now owned by Ardagh Glass and although with a much reduced capacity the site remains in production and its outline is an easily recognisable landmark.

Most people are aware of Barnsley’s mining history, but there is also a rich tradition of glass making in the borough. In fact the town coat of arms features both a collier and a glassmaker.
Sadly most of the furnaces have long gone and the only manufacturer is to be found at Monk Bretton just outside the town.

Here it’s distinctive outline is shown at sunset.

It’s grim up north.
It may have had a reputation for being dirty but many of the old industrial sites are now wonderful places where nature is thriving. This photo is 10 minutes walk from my home down in the Dearne Valley just a mile outside Barnsley and is on the site of an old glass works.
