In the summer of 1963, two young musicians were working hard on a new composition. John, 22, and Paul, 21, sat side by side in front of a piano in the parlor of Paul’s home, a small house in Liverpool, England, where he’d grown up and still lived with his family.

After a final polish of the tune and the lyrics, the pair excitedly sang their brand-new song for Paul’s father, Jim McCartney, who was a musician himself, and then asked what he thought.

“That’s very nice, son,” said Jim, “but there’s enough of these Americanisms around. Couldn’t you sing: ‘She loves you, Yes Yes Yes’, instead?”

We all know what happened. The composers stuck with the original wording, and the song was released as a single on 23 August 1963, exactly 60 years ago today. “She Loves You” went immediately to #1, becoming the Beatles first mega-hit and kicking off the Beatlemania phenomenon.

But my question is this — if the boys had followed Jim’s advice and used “Yes Yes Yes” in place of “Yeah Yeah Yeah”, would we live in a different world today? Could the song have flopped and the band soon faded away, slipping back into obscurity?

Probably not. But you never know!
