Isobel Campbell - Amorino by Isobel

Post Gentle Waves, Isobel sets out on a solo career in 2003, and gets whacked by the critics tired of Belle and Sebastian.

But this is pretty obviously different, and I think she knows her singing limitations and uses her instrument well.

Influences and references clear from the LP cover, and sampling Getz/Gilberto gives the game away.

Fun to compare to the previously mentioned “There is no other…”

Isobel Campbell - There Is No Other…

Campbell started out in Belle and Sebastian, but has been doing solo work for many years. I guess she was stuck in a terrible label dispute, and this is her first release in many years.

Intimate, almost whispered (yet melodic) vocals, accompanied with quiet instrumentation. It’s maybe a quieter A Girl Called Eddy, or maybe Francoise Hardy. Think chamber pop and you’re close.

Anyway, delightful.

It's apparently the 26th anniversary of Belle and Sebastian's "If You're Feeling Sinister" ~ a few years ago I waxed rhapsodic about just how perfect it was for managing the sleepless nights shortly after our son was born ~ the 26th anniversary of his release is a few months away!
