@SocialistStan Oh - the RCC now is different in material ways. I'm still an ex-member and strongly atheist. But it isn't what it was: we can see that in the splits that the new guy has caused with the old, paedophile protecting gang - aligned to #Benedict - hating him and his reforms so strongly.

Their god still doesn't exist. And there is still huge abuse or a range of kinds (not least indoctrination of kids with lies). But it isn't the same.

@inkican Well - they've gone some way to doing better - but it's outrageous that he was allowed to retire and faced no prosecution for his policies of protecting child-sex criminals (and others in fact).

His great crime was to elevate protection of the insitution above protection of humans. And what an enourmous crime that turned out to be. All those people who will now nbot see justice - not least of all, the victims of Marcial Maciel, to whom #Benedict denied justice - in person.

With the news about the passing of former #Pope #BenedictXVI I figured I might share my favourite photo because of the framing from when we visited the #VaticanCity and St Peter’s Basilica back in 2019. Raised #Catholic I am nevertheless most definitely #atheist but still love visiting religious buildings and settings for the historical and cultural significance.
