There are "scientific" ways to make profits, but not to end human-made misery it seems. Only the ruling class are capable of being rational & "scientific" apparently; yet bourgeois science is abased by its prostration before capitalist politics (comprising of idealist philosophy, religion and any old superstition that seems to suit their purpose) and virtually everywhere, its direct subordination to the profits and interests of a few instead of the interests of society. #BertrandRussell #Marx

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.

“The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge. Neither love without knowledge, nor knowledge without love can produce a good life.” ~ Lord Bertrand Russell

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy; I mean that if you are happy you will be good.

“One should as a rule respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny, and is likely to interfere with happiness in all kinds of ways.” ~ Lord Bertrand Russell, “The Conquest of Happiness”

"New ideas are unpleasant to the great majority of mankind. They disturb habits. They may alter the balance of power. And there is always a risk that they may be socially subversive."
— #BertrandRussell Fact and Fiction (1961), Part II. Politics and Education, Essay I: What is Freedom?, p. 56
Fact and Fiction (1961) is a collection of Bertrand Russell’s essays.
"When an illness is incurable and painful, and makes useful activity impossible, it is mere cruelty to prolong life; at any rate if the sufferer is anxious to die, or has lost reason. The prolongation of life can be neither a happiness to the sufferer nor a benefit to society, and is therefore equally unjustified from the standpoint of the individual and from that of the community."
Strah je osnova verske dogme, kao i mnogih drugih ljudskih delatnosti.
Strah od drugih ljudi dominira našim socijalnim životom ali strah od prirode je doveo do religije.

Beautiful excerpt from Bertrand Russell's essay 'How to Grow Old'
"An individual human existence should be like a river: small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being."

#BertrandRussell, who made efforts to have Boole’s papers printed, said that "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought" as “the work in which pure mathematics was discovered”. In it Boole applied his #boolean mathematics to the philosophy of #Spinoza and others as a practical demonstration.

Life often encourages us to spend all our energy on chasing what we want, but we seldom pause to wonder — if we get what we chase, will it make us happy? Be kind to yourself and take a moment to contemplate what would make you happy if you got it, then compare it with what you chase. The result may be unexpected.
