Fascinating SNEWS seminar talk today by Charlie Kilpatrick (Northwestern University, CIERA) on pre-supernova evolution of stars—basically, can brightness variations (like in #Betelgeuse recently) predict when a start is about to explode in a #supernova?

"A fresh prognosis on Betelgeuse's condition based on its pulsations gives the celebrated supergiant just a few decades before it collapses in a final flash of glory."

The probability that I will see a #supernova in my lifetime is pretty high and I think that's really wonderful.

La luminosità di #Betelgeuse fa sperare in un finale con il botto https://www.lescienze.it/news/2023/05/18/news/sfavillamento_betelgeuse_fine_vita_stella_supernova-12140958/?rss #spazio
From 2011 to 2021, the average increase in brightness of the #nightskies over #NorthAmerica and #Europe was 9.6% per year. That means that, for many of us, the #stars are disappearing. In an effort to raise awareness of #lightpollution – and to assess the state of our night skies – an international citizen-science campaign called #GlobeatNight wants you to survey your #sky. The project runs every month around new #moon, when the sky is darkest.

hot (get it, because stars?) take: #Sirius #Rigel #Betelgeuse #Bellatrix and #Polaris are the best #Stars that are named and visible in the night sky. I am not gonna state an order, but these are 100% the top 5 and you are wrong if you disagree

2/ normally, i adore everything related to #astronomy. at #night, taking out the day’s trash, i stop to look at the #sky, searching for familiar #planets & #stars
it tickles me 2C #OrionsBelt, #betelgeuse & #bellatrix
my favorite lights are #capella #sirius & #vega
knowing the #SpaceStation & #HubbleTelescope are beneath my feet, with the #sun, is astounding
tracking “my very” & “mother just served” (IYKYK) makes me smile
but, the #moon? how i loathe it, because of what it brings

More a #YouTube video kind of person? How about something on #Betelgeuse ? When will that enigmatic star explode? Will we get to see it? How do we predict supernovae?

If you have clear skies in the UK this evening (a big IF I think), look east to see #Orion, #Mars, Taurus and the #Pleiades cluster. #Aldebaran is orange in colour so looks a bit like Mars, but remember that stars twinkle, planets don’t. Good to see #Betelgeuse is still there! #space #astronomy #Astrodon #lookup

Every time I look to the #stars, I look for the #constellation #orion & then to #Betelgeuse hoping beyond hope that it'll go #Supernova. It's overdue.

What will happen to Betelgeuse? How bright will it get? When will it go Supernova? Will we get to see it? How do we predict supernovae?

It takes
46 BILLION YEARS for light to travel from one side of the observable #universe to the other...
10 BILLION YEARS for a star like the Sun to die and create a White Dwarf...
30 MILLION YEARS for a star like #Betelgeuse to explode as a #supernova ...
4 MILLION YEARS for early human species to evolve into ours...
yet ONLY
0.5 SECONDS for my unfiltered brain to say something mid and mildly awkward that I will periodically wake up thinking about at 3am for the next 15 to 20 working years

Study of data from weather #satellite confirms theories surrounding the dimming of #Betelgeuse in 2019 @NatureAstronomy https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-022-01680-5 https://phys.org/news/2022-05-weather-satellite-theories-dimming-betelgeuse.html
A great behind-the-scenes look at determining how the great dimming of Betelgeuse happened by Miguel Montargès, one of the authors of the new Nature paper.
"This episode is a unique oppportunity to understand the dynamics and the mass loss mechanism of red supergiant stars, and to better constrain their spectacular fate as supernovae, and later on as neutron stars or black holes."

The star Betelgeuse is now dimming, raising speculation that it might be about to go supernova.
So, of course, somebody has build a twitter bot that posts daily updates on the status of Betelgeuse, using observatory data.
I suppose adapting the code to toot on Mastodon shouldn't be that hard, right? 🙂
