2/2 Ophanim are sometimes called galgalim (also just means wheels). The "thousands of eyes" were inevitable—eyes were symbolically important across ancient Mesopotamia. Anyway, ophanim are my faves because they're so weird. I made them hyper-sentient in my stories because OMG so fun! I also describe them as having a shape that defies the mathematical laws in our world, so you get a headache if you look at them.

The word "ophan"/"wheel" was used to describe chariot wheels. The concept of ophanim probably began as a description of divine chariot wheels. The old gods were usually depicted as luminaries driving chariots across the sky. The Mesopotamian game of Telephone took care of the rest, and that's why horrifying, sentient wheels are a thing. 1/2
