For those who have attended #BigMathsJam, I used a yarn from @lottieknits for my Moebius shawl, which several of you admired...
A #BletchleyMathsJam update (Other @MathsJam s are available: https://www.mathsjam.com/find-a-jam/):
Hi MathsJammers!
→ This month's #MathsJam will be on Tuesday 22nd August at Brewhouse & Kitchen in Milton Keynes: https://goo.gl/maps/S3YdvF7tuUDcyNwS9
→ A bunch of #maths #teachers are getting together at the Tate Modern to play with the Zero to Infinity installation, & planning to do a bit of light maths promoting while we're there. Let me know if you'd like to join us. Exhibition info: https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/uniqlo-tate-play/uniqlo-tate-play-zero-to-infinity
→ This year's Talking Maths in Public (#TMiP) conference is being held in Newcastle, 31/08 - 02/09. I'll be there; let me know if you're going too! I believe there are still spaces available. Details here: https://talkingmathsinpublic.uk/
→ This year's MathsJam Gathering (#BigMathsJam) is being held, as usual, at Yarnfield Park in Stone, Staffordshire, 11/11 - 12/11. I'll be there too! Bookings haven't opened yet, but details so far are here: https://www.mathsjam.com/gathering/uk/
*Keeping in touch:*
I chatted with some people last month about how best to keep in touch & the only thing I came away with was that everybody would prefer something different, so you can choose any or all of these ways to find out about Bletchley MathsJam related things and I'll do my best to update them consistently (and please pass these on to anyone you meet who might be even remotely interested!):
→ The Bletchley MathsJam page on the official MathsJam website is at https://www.mathsjam.com/cities/bletchley/
→ Join the Bletchley MathsJam mailing list at https://www.freelists.org/list/bletchleymathsjam
→ Follow @BletchleyJam and/or @TeaKayB on twitter
→ Follow me on Mastodon: https://mathstodon.xyz/@TeaKayB (I'll also try to remember to include #BletchleyMathsJam in relevant posts)
→ email me directly

We made a square from one Tangram, then a square from two, then each number of Tangrams 3-7 except one which is impossible, a puzzle I got from Colin Graham at #BigMathsJam (is he on here?).
Then we made cats. Hey internet, you like cat pictures, right?
Just found the prime number I adopted at #BigMathsJam. As a piece of paper with some maths on, I’m storing it in its natural environment on my messy desk.
I've put the recording of my @BigMathsJam talk on YouTube.
I set myself the ambitious goal of showing five fun maths facts to do with trains within the allotted time. There was also a really good puzzle I wanted to share, so I shoved that in too.

I've spent the evening trying to spin the wool that @karenshancock gave me at #BigMathsJam.
Let's just say that Var(thickness) is non-negligible
Since #BigMathsJam I've been trying on and off to solve the Greenwich-branded Rubik's cube that Tony Mann gave me, but I never get more than a minute in before the toddler grabs it off me and says "my turn!!!"
But beyond predicting a squishy relativistic demise for our favourite anthropomorphic cuboids, this analysis doesn't do much to illuminate either Numberblocks *or* homology theory. Back to the old drawing board. #BigMathsJam
EXCEPT! In "Alphablocks & Numberblocks", we see that both groups of 'blocks live on spherical planets. Assuming the Colourblocks also live on a spherical planet, the space they occupy is actually ℝ³−(3×𝐷₃), whose third homology group is ℤ³. This space is generated by three non-homotopic, planet-engulfing Megablocks, who even now are contracting towards the 'block planets at what we can only assume is a respectable fraction of lightspeed. #BigMathsJam
But ℝ³ is contractible! Which means that all the Numberblocks can be contracted to a point, and their contribution to any homology group higher than 𝐻₀ is zero. Which we should have been able to predict from the way One can duplicate herself using the magic mirror: \(x = x + x \implies x = 0 \). #BigMathsJam
This *almost* works. One is clearly a homotopy class of embeddings [0,1]³→ℝ³, the other numbers are formal sums of copies of One, and combining 'blocks to make larger blocks makes the boundaries disappear, suggesting there's some kind of alternating sum going on. Excellent. We're most of the way to defining a cellular complex. https://mathstodon.xyz/@pozorvlak/109375220074306682
After the success of my #BigMathsJam talk on GeoGebra One-liners, I decided to have another go at drawing that nice tiling with squares whose side lengths are Fibonacci numbers. This afternoon I came up with this: https://www.geogebra.org/m/fpquefwc
@mpershan The question is ... what is your question?
It's late here, and I'm still exhausted after the #BigMathsJam weekend, but I'm happy to provide an overview, and some guidance.
Just ... not now.
I can see the rain coming across the hills, but I'm safely on my second of four trains, warm and dry.
Thinking about some of the #maths from the #BigMathsJam, and still in the throes of the #BigMathsJamRecovery ...

At #BigMathsJam, @MathematicalAdventurer gave me a poster for the Recreational Mathematics Colloquium VII, taking place in January in the Azores. Consider going to it!

Current state of #BigMathsJam recovery: just managed to fit the definition of the Jones polynomial to the tune of _In These Shoes?_ by Kirsty MacColl.
For those of you at #BigMathsJam - and anyone else interested.
I spun up some of the soyabean fibre on Saturday night - here are the before and after photos.

@andrewt It's always a delight to see this - it captures the atmosphere of #BigMathsJam as well as the content!
