Supreme Court clears way for #MountainValleyPipeline construction to proceed

"The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for construction of the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline to proceed, granting an emergency request from backers of the project that has the support of Congress and the Biden administration.

"The justices agreed to lift lower court orders that froze construction of the project while legal challenges play out.

"The Supreme Court’s order is a victory for #WestVirginia Sen. #JoeManchin, a conservative Democrat who has championed the project and pushed for it during #DebtCeiling negotiations in June.

"In the brief order, the court offered no extensive reasoning and no dissents were noted.

"The order came as the White House announced new actions to combat #climate-fueled extreme heat, which has been baking cities in the Southwest for weeks before moving Northeast on Thursday.

"Despite #ClimateActivists urging the Biden administration to stop approving #FossilFuel projects like the #MountainValley Pipeline, White House officials have been supportive of the pipeline since it was first introduced in Congress last year. More recently, administration officials including White House senior adviser #JohnPodesta and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm voiced support this year for the pipeline’s approval.

"The White House did not immediately return CNN’s request for comment on the Supreme Court allowing the pipeline to proceed."

"Maplight found only two of the 118 members of the House of Representatives who list oil and gas industry among their top 10 campaign contributors opposed fast-tracking the pipeline. The two hold-outs were Ed Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat who headed the global warming committee that has since been disbanded by the Republican leadership in the house, and Charlie Bass, a New Hampshire Republican.

"Here's a look at some of the #OilAndGasIndustry's favourite members of Congress as compiled by Maplight – all members of the $100,000 club, and all supporters of a bill to push Obama to pass the pipeline – along with some of their recent statements on the Keystone tar sands project.

"From Steven Pearce, the New Mexico Republican, who heads the list, receiving $370,000 in direct contributions from the oil and gas industry in the two years from July 2009-July 2011. 'It is time to put the political games aside,' the congressman said on his website last month. 'We must all work together to ensure the culmination of projects, such as the Keystone pipeline.'

"Mike Pompeo, the Republican who represents the Wichita Kansas hometown of the oil billionaire Koch brothers, comes in number two on the list with $333,156 in industry contributions. Pompeo is also the main recipient of Koch political funds, according to another organisation tracking money and influence, Opensecrets.org.

"Bill Flores, a former oil company executive and a Republican from central Texas who received $266,184 in industry funds according to Maplight during the debate on the Keystone bill last July, has said: 'If we do not tap this valuable resource, the Chinese or other countries will.'

"Dan Boren, an Oklahoma Democrat who received $201,800, said the pipeline would create 'tens of thousands of new jobs' – claims that have been debunked by economists."

"Obama has until 21 February to make a decision on whether to approve the pipeline, under a compromise tax measure approved late last year. America's top oil lobbyist warned last week that the president would face "huge political consequences" if he did not sign off on the project to pump tar sands crude across the American heartland to refineries on the Texas coast.

"The Canadian government is also on the offensive, with an attack this week on 'jet-setting celebrities' opposed to tar sands pipelines. At the same time, TransCanada executives have embarked on a letter-writing campaign.

"Now Maplight, an independent research group in Berkeley, California, that tracks the influence of money in politics, has conducted an analysis of oil industry contributions to members of Congress supporting the pipeline."

"Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I am pleased that you have scheduled this series of hearings on global #ClimateChange. It is a serious issue. One that generated a considerable concern a few years ago.

"That concern culminated in the #RioConference in 1992 and the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

"Since then, however, there has been some skepticism and confusion about whether manmade climate change really exists. And if it does, whether the consequences are trivial or serious. [Skepticism and confusion sowed by #BigOil!]

"As a result, I think the public has become less certain that the threat is real and that we are on the right course to counter it.

"So as the U.S. and other countries prepare to head to #Kyoto, Japan, later this year to decide what the next steps should be, it is appropriate for us to review the entire issue.

"We should examine the scientific basis for our climate change program. Explore the consequences of action, or inaction. And review the steps we might take to combat this threat.

"Today's hearing will focus on the scientific issues surrounding climate change. A lot of research has taken place since the Senate ratified the Framework Convention in 1992. Additional data has been collected. And new tools and techniques have been developed to analyze it.

"Much of the new information appears to further substantiate the seriousness of the threat we face. So I look forward to reviewing this work with our distinguished witnesses.

Are you being lied to on social media? In adverts? By the business "leaders". Or some of the "paid off" politicians in the News? Is the News being "paid off" by a corporation?

Who can we trust? What we can, generally trust is science. The experiments, etc. But, how do you know that the "science" is really the science and not pseudoscience? Well, the more you learn of, for example, chemistry, the less other people can "greenwash" you with their ignorant or deceitful rhetoric.

What the fossil fuel industries really knew (& know) about climate change was very different from what they told the public. What the fuel industries really know about the harmful effects of inhaling air pollution is very different from what they say to the public.

As a thought experiment - what would be the sociopolitical impact if people received an evidenced based leaflet through their letter boxes? For example:

1. "Big Oil" knew that it's fuels would cause catastrophic ecological effects - but lied to try & cover up the science (Ref: The climate deception dossiers)

2. Those effects are now causing death & destruction (& projections are - it will get worse)

3. "Big Oil" is making record profit's.

Who said crime doesn't pay?

Environmental organisations can collaborate, design such a leaflet, & use the postal system to inform those - that may only read or watch 'mainstream' social media. "Big oil's" criminal record is the crime of the "century"

People need to know.
