#Biko was a great man! Thanks for the reminder!
Interestingly, Wikipedia notes that he was a proponent of ‘African Socialism’ & believed that a socialist society was necessary to ensure social justice.
“He believed that, if post-apartheid South Africa remained capitalist, some black people would join the bourgeoisie but inequality and poverty would remain. As he put it, if South Africa transitioned to proportional democracy without socialist economic reforms, then ‘it would not change the position of economic oppression of the blacks"’.
…. which, sadly, is exactly what’s happened. The country has stayed largely Capitalist & millions of indigenous people remain in poverty!
Rhetorical question: When #Israel’s #Apartheid is no more & #Palestine is free “from the river to the sea”, which Palestinians will we remember in the same way that we now remember Biko, Mandela, Tutu, Sisulu, Tambo, Goldberg, Slovo & Suzman?
Will it be Kareem Younis who spent 40 years in Israeli prison? Will it be the resisters of the #Jenin refugee camp or the population of #Gaza who have endured multiple brutal attacks from land, sea & air by #Israel’s ‘most moral army in the world? Will it be Shireen Abu Akleh, the Al Jazeera journalist assassinated by an Israeli sniper whilst doing her job in Jenin? Who knows?

Today in History August 18, 1977: Steve Biko was arrested at a police roadblock under the Terrorism Act No. 83 in King William's Town, South Africa. He later died from injuries received during this arrest. Biko was a socialist and an anti-apartheid activist. He was 31 at the time of his assassination. He was influenced by the teachings of Martinican philosopher Frantz Fanon and the American Black Power Movement. His death brought international attention to South Africa's apartheid policies and helped launch the modern anti-apartheid movement.
