(I have previously expressed my criticisms of #Bill96 — #PL96 , which I consider as a plan to hassle #Québec anglophones, without doing anything significant to protect the French language.)

The #JustinTrudeau ministry is not supporting Mr. Housefather's amendments or views, so this shows unusual independence for a #Liberal backbencher.

It's also disappointing that #Conservative MPs should be acting as instruments of the #CAQ on this matter.

Obviously a phone case is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but damn if this isn’t representative of the kind of predictable and preventable nonsense this government was repeatedly warned against when #Bill96 (and every other stupid language law like it) was proposed.

"Bill 96 is a sweeping piece of legislation that covers almost all government departments, municipalities and Crown corporations. So this will come up a lot: when people are getting a new driver's license, asking questions about their hydro bill, applying for parental leave benefits, talking with their child's teacher — what are government employees supposed to do in all those situations if they're asked to speak English?"

@emacsen I was in the march against #Bill96 ( #PL96 ) a few weeks ago. A bad law, and not even one that is likely to do anything useful about the problem of the decline of French in Québec, if such a problem even exists.

Le prétexte pour ce loi est que le français est en déclin au Québec, un problème grave si vrai. Mais ce declin n'est pas de tout évident. Honte à la #CAQ qui a pris des mesures rendant les vies des Québécois plus difficile, sans justification que ces mesures résoudront des problèmes.
