@Paulatics

Meta and Google blocking news is a logical reaction to the c18 requirement to pay - and one that they informed everyone (including the gov't) that they would do if the law passed. And so they did. To now point at them and say they're being irresponsible is ridiculous.
Canadians need to be able to share links with each other on a common platform. I hate FB, but at the moment, it is THAT platform.

In other news, several able bodies residents of Toronto starved to death because UberEats refused to deliver to their neighbourhood.

@davidakin I think there was a symbiotic between canadian media and these platforms. It was which tipped the balance in favour of one and at the expense of the other, which is the root cause of this problem. actions are a predictable and reasonable reaction to that.

@saila i think the fact are getting bent out of shape so much by and doing this, shows that this law was much more in their favour than in tech's, or even fair. I am neither disappointed, nor conflicted by this. It seams a perfectly reasonable and expected result, which will hopefully result in the repeal of this bad law.

Looking for suggestions for alternatives for morning newsfeed scrolling. I used to get my news primarily from birdsite.
Rarely now for obvious reasons. And now in light of in I'm trying not to rely on Meta/Google either.

I just installed CBC app and will try that out but interested in aggregate source options.

Totally agree this is a disaster for canadian media. Totally disgree on where this article lays the blame.

This was predicted from the start and should come as a surprise to no one. As such the blame belongs squarely at the feet of government and media who thought they could blackmail big tech.

@geekymalcolm

Does anybody exist who didn't actually see this coming. They were warned from the start. was a horrible law from the getgo. Surely this must be what the government and the media wanted.

@oriolsalvador yes. News organizations need to start taking responsibility for retaining their own audiences. It is a pity that it has taken the damaging to figure that out.

Promoters of

Google and Meta are taking all our news media without paying for it. They are profiting from us and we deserve compensation.

Also promoters of

Google and Meta have stopped carrying our content. They are trying to destroy canadian media.

I'm sorry. But you can't have it both ways.

Y a quand même des petits joueurs qui ont tenté de se faire entendre (en vain) en dénonçant ce train wreck en devenir:

@NMBA @winnipegfreepress while I hate and dropped them myself years ago, I hate the legalized theft that is even more. Why should these tech companies be forced to subsidize the failed media business models?

@dalybeauty @seldo I sure hope it is the government that blinks first. is a bad solution to the wrong problem. The sooner it is recinded the better.

Dear Canada.

academic.oup.com/jcmc/article/

Just leaving this here. Just remember when you only have publishers owned by billionaires and all your smaller publishers went out of business.... it's not like there wasn't plenty of warning.

A 20% drop for smaller publishers, and that was when Social media was excluded from the Bill.

"By “cutting off Canadians’ access to news” he means they would no longer post links to articles on news sites — a practice that until about five minutes ago was denounced as “stealing content,” and now is on the verge of being declared an essential service."

Good. Users on facebook linking to news articles shouldn't cost facebook money. Otherwise, all the news orgs will setup bot farms posting their content.
And what about when an org posts links to their own content on facebook? Would that count?

(The discussion of Google taking snippets and putting them in search results is much different)

Creating a new pseudocopyright to control who can discuss the news is a terrible idea, one that will make the media companies beholden to the tech giants at a time when we desperately need deep, critical reporting on the tech sector. In Canada, where is the latest link tax proposal in the running to become law, we're already seeing that conflict of interest come into play.
