What’s the difference between Iridium and Inmarsat satellite phones? Inmarsat phones operate off of Geostationary satellites over 22,000 miles altitude in high earth orbit. As of 2023 there are 14 of these stationary satellites. They orbit around and focus on the equator. The communication path on the Inmarsat system is from your satellite phone to one of the satellites. Then it goes to a ground station and through the local networks to the receiver and back.
