"As an openly gay, influential African-American writer, poet & flamboyant speaker, living through the battle for civil rights, had reason to be afraid - & yet, he wasn't. A TV interviewer once asked Baldwin to describe the challenges he faced starting his career as "a black, impoverished homosexual," to which Baldwin laughed and replied: "I thought I'd hit the jackpot."

Watching ‘Is That Black Enough For You?’ on Netflix. It’s powerful and uncomfortable. Watch it and know our (mostly entertainment industry, but also American) history better, because these truths aren’t taught in schools. You have to seek them.

In 1962, James Baldwin wrote "A Letter to My Nephew" that was intended as a message to his nephew about the harsh realities of being black in the US.
Unfortunately, more than 50yrs later, many things are still true today.
