Screenshot of the unreadably buried text of a Guardian article "Lest we remember: how Britain buried its history of slavery" and its failure to display in my common browser. I had to select all then copy and paste the text into a plain text file to make it readable.

Visited Abbey House Museum yesterday to catch the Curious Creatures exhibition about Victorian attitudes to the animal kingdom before it finishes on 31st Dec.
Some interesting bits in there about local circus entrepreneur Pablo Fanque. Here's a video about his life...

, 2 Dec 1954, Winifred Atwell becomes the first Black person to top the British singles chart with her track “Let's Have Another Party”. Originally from Trinidad, she moved to London to take up a place at the Royal Academy of Music.

Her hands were insured by Lloyds of London with a clause stating that she must never wash dishes.

In 2020 I published Lucia’s War, a story of a Jamaican girl’s desperate quest to make it as a musician and resolve a tragic secret in her past. Set during WWI in London and Glasgow, it is described as “a symphony as beautiful as it is violent”

Intrigued? Find out more here, read some reviews.

(There’s also a cameo of Yeats making a tit of himself.)

Have just finished 'Black and British' by David Olusoga. It is SO good. It starts from Roman Britain and gets to the early 1980s. It's written in an engaging style that tells a story, but includes footnotes for those who like them.

I feel like it was a lot to take in, but this shouldn't be surprising since it covers c. 2000 years of history. Also, brain fog doesn't help with information retention! I plan on reading it again in a few months.

Highly recommend this book; it's essential reading if you want to learn about .

I just want to say that David Olusoga's book 'Black and British: A Forgotten History' is really REALLY good. He has a really accessible style and knows how to use the original sources, often from black people, to tell a story.

Obviously, some of the events you read about are upsetting, so it can be a hard read at times. But I think an essential one, especially for white people.

I highly recommend this book.

Oh, and thanks to this book, I've finally learned where the term 'Jim Crowe' comes from.

The history of Black British gardeners is one of resistance.

From the transatlantic slave trade to Kew Gardens and the Chelsea Flower Show, the long history of Black horticulturists can’t be forgotten. gal-dem.com/the-history-of-bla
