This was a fun conversation, and I'm pretty excited that I can read it without looking up too many words. π³π΄ Good to see coverage of these two important films!

Woot, Hayti Film Fest in person! (With a mask on.) One of the many reasons I love living in Durham.

I want to say something else about biases that we consciously and subconsciously hold, no matter who we are, where we come from, how we were raised...I think we believe if we don't admit to our biases, they are not there or others won't see them. One thing that is appealing about Peele's work is the horror's secretness, and hiddenness, this hidden subculture of sickness.

@MevsMatze Something else I didn't get on my first couple of watches but found out more about in the documentary was the significance of those killer buck horns used to stab the crazy doctor/patriarch. "Black Buck" was a racial slur in the post-Reconstruction United States, a caricature of a certain type of black man who refused to bend to white authority and who was seen as irredeemable. (Wikipedia, Black Buck)

To begin, I will say that as a white person who has grown up and lived in the South in a white middle-class evangelical pastor's family and who has married into this same subculture (though subsequently divorced.), Peele unveils some uncomfortable truths in Get Out: The supposed "woke" and liberal among us may still have deeper biases that we hold onto for a variety of reasons.

For #BlackHistoryMonth the #HorrorMovieClub will be watching, rewatching, and discussing #blackfilm. Our first discussion is based on the documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror and Jordan Peele's Get Out. To start, a couple of questions: In your opinion, and according to the documentary, what are some ways blacks have been misportrayed in horror movies? And what does Jordan Peele finally get right in Get Out? What makes Get Out scary?

To kick off #BlackHistoryMonth the #HorrorMovieClub is watching and discussing the documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. While we get our thoughts together, may I also suggest discussing "Nope?" I may ask questions about this according to some initial comments in the doc. Please watch/rewatch. π€ π

During my early years in the Deep South of America, I experienced diversity at school, especially in Arkansas. As a white student, I was often in the minority. The only thing that won me some respect was basketball, and in particular, my ability to steel. What I hope for #BlackHistoryMonth is diversity in the discussion of #BlackFilm, particularly #HorrorMovies. I'm just a white lady who knows nothing. I hope all kinds of people can come together to discuss and discern #MovieHistory evolution.

#SidneyPoitier was the 1st #BlackActor & 1st Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. His films of the 1950s & 1960s systematically eradicated a host of taboos & stereotypes regarding the portrayal of African Americans on film & paved the way for generations of Black film stars.
An inspirational story honoring his life & legacy was released in September 2022 & on Apple TV+

Sugar Cane Alley, written and directed by Euzhan Palcy takes place in the 1930s, and is a very good depiction of the stories our parents and grandparents told us about life after slavery.
Whether it was cane, coconut, banana, pineapple, etc pay attention to the dynamics in the film.

I haven't seen the film "Devotion" yet, but it has a true black hero, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
It's important, #blackhistory & stories are told as the white-washing of history influences the image of #POC that is portrayed throughout society. It allows systematic racism to thrive & leads to the tolerance/ acceptance of prejudice & injustice.

Now watching #documentary #IsThatBlackEnoughForYou by #ElvisMitchell. On Netflix. I dragged my feet to see it. I had Prof #DonaldBogle in college. I thought I knew everything about history of #BlackFilm (hahaha.). Doc is great. Many perspectives I never even considered + lots of films I need to hunt down to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElWKkC0h42w
