I was driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia late in the afternoon, glanced over and pulled off to the side immediately. This is not Photoshopped - this is exactly what I saw that afternoon. Amazing! I have to wonder what this looked like to the people on the edge of the spotlight of sun.

The Cone Mansion overlooks Bass Lake, viewed from one of the 25 miles of carriage trails on the large estate.

Eight minutes after the sun rose above the earth's sea level horizon, it rose over the top of Sharp Top Mountain. It really is very exciting to watch the light as the sun creeps closer to the visible horizon, waiting for it to burst into view!

As a sunrise photographer in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I love that I usually have a few extra minutes to get to my location before the sun rises above the horizon. In this shot, the sun had just come up over the earth's sea level horizon, but it would be another 8 minutes before it came up over the mountain top. The light was dazzling and dramatic!

A hiker passed me at the Rock Castle Gorge overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. He said it was the first time he'd been so far south on the Parkway. The Appalachian Trail is a beautiful place to hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Took a little road trip up to The Great Valley overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia yesterday. This is the location I was at when I photographed the Great Valley Sunset (posted the image earlier this week).

The sign reads: The Great Valley extends through the Appalachians from New York to Alabama. Here the valley is confined by the Alleghenies on the west and by the Blue Ridge on the east. The Great Warrior Path of the Iroquois and Cherokee was used by the Scotch-Irish and German pioneers from Pennsylvania when they migrated down the valley to settle this area in 1730-50. --- United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

I'm blessed to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains and to be so close to one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

A dozen years of visiting the #BlueRidgeParkway #SmartviewRecreationArea and Sunday was the first time I encountered a snail on the picnic area roadway. I sometimes have to race the clock to get to a particular overlook in time for sunrise on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The speed limit is 45 mph and there are deer herds out before dawn. This tall stump is covered with what may ve poison ivy vines and fungus, but what are the pieces that look like eggshells?
