I always enjoy watching bumblebees going about their business. Observed this Bombus appositus (white-shouldered bumblebee) last weekend visiting a population Gentiana parryi (Parry's Gentian) in the Pecos Wilderness, Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico. Earlier in the season, before the Gentiana are flowering, I have seen these bees visiting several other genera of wildflowers including Monarda, Oxytropis, and Penstemon.

Bombus hortorum queen in the garden. A long-tongued species which seems to be declining so glad to see her around.

, e.g., and , have larger ranges than bees, because bigger bees have greater flight abilities, and also because bees from greater colonies need to travel further to avoid competition with their colony members.

Can anyone remember the reference for worker ovaries shrinking?

I think it was to do with a queen being introduced to queen less colonies.

I posted this on twitter a while ago, but perhaps you might be interested....

You can identify 100 species with AI. Just cut out the bee image and upload it. I tried some pics---wow, it even identified deuteronymus (although it didn’t tell me its subspecies name “maruhanabachi”). Fast & accurate!
