“I could go on for ages about SF’s direct links to Woolf and modernism – the subjective and the impersonal, different levels of perspective, a single day in the life of a character and vast deserts of eternity”

With his latest novel, IN ASCENSION, longlisted for the 2023, Martin MacInnes discusses the interconnectedness of life – & why arts & sciences belong together

IN ASCENSION
by Martin MacInnes

Congratulations to Martin MacInnes, whose latest novel, In Ascension, has been longlisted for the 2023

“Exploring the natural world with wonder and reverence, this compassionate, deeply inquisitive epic reaches outward to confront the great questions of existence, while looking inward to illuminate the human heart.”

I've discovered a major blindspot. I brought The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida (by Shehan Karunatilaka; it won the last year) on my trip and it takes place during the Sri Lankan civil war, and I'm like, what?

So now that I'm home I crack open Wikipedia and holy civilian massacres, Batman. It went on from 1983 till 2009, including during the 2004 Tsunami, and I'm sure we were all too distracted by the in the 2000s but before that, you'd think I'd have been more aware of it. Especially during the whole End-of-History-90s.

Speaking of the GWoT, check this out, it's the WTC Colombo! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tr

@chineseliterature

Book 17 of 2023. I usually love booker prize books, but this one was not in my wheelhouse. So meh. But I did read it all.

Last night I finished reading the winner "The Seven Moons of Maalli Almeida" - which I chose mainly because one of my daughters in law is Sri Lankan. I have sometimes been disappointed by prize-winninng books - but not by this one. *Highly* recommended.

'The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida', 2022 Booker Prize winner, was a particularly difficult read for moi, and not only because the narrator is a murdered gay photojournalist who must solve his own murder to move on in the afterlife, or because of the sheer brutality of the political scenario it depicts. It was the realization that much of this is true..... 1/?

I have just finished reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida.
It's dazzling, devastating, wickedly funny, and haunting in every sense.

Loved this. A serendipitous find on the ‘take me’ shelves at daughter’s school.
