Apologies - too much boosting can be a bit overwhelming, so for my own sanity and productivity I'll have to mute the above post (at least for a while).
Nevertheless, keep boosting/re-tooting/reblogging all those great people around you - especially if they are just starting out!

I believe the answer to your question is no, you can't boost too much! #BoostAllTheThings
Also, there is a way for having group functionality in the #Fediverse:
Simply follow @electronics and whenever you mention @electronics in a post it will be shared to all of its members (currently only myself though).
If you wanted to start another group (eg @makers@gup.pe ) just search for it, and it'll be created automatically.
See https://a.gup.pe/ for details.

Here's what I gathered:
A post only shows up on *your* timeline if you follow the original author or someone you follow boosts it.
If the author is on your own instance their post appears on the *local* timeline.
If someone on your instance follows the author, boosted the post, or specifically searched for that posts URL, the post appears on the *federated* timeline.
Otherwise the post never even reaches your instance, let alone you.
To add to the above:
Since there is no #algorithm it is really important that you #boost interesting posts by others.
A star (liking) does nothing to help increase a post's visibility beyond the original author's followers.
I know it is strange coming from 🐦, but it really is the only way to increase a post's audience.
So #BoostAllTheThings (if you like them) and you will notice others will do the same to your content. Here we're all in it together!
