The spectre of walls is haunting Europe again. Three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the question resurfaces: Should the European Union erect barriers to protect its external borders?

The reality is that it is already doing so ā€“ in the last eight years member states have built more than 1,700 kilometers of walls to protect themselves not against tanks or soldiers, but against migrants and refugees.

I DON'T recommend trying this yourself, but it's worth observing as part of the gaps and cracks in the world's system of countries an : Unrecognized , including from , are apparently sometimes accepted by unwitting or uncaring border control agents...

Construction of a planned barbed-wired fence along Finland's long border with Russia will start early next year, Finnish border guard officials have announced, amid concerns in the Nordic country over the changing security environment in Europe.

The fence will eventually extend to a maximum of 200 kilometres.

Finlandā€™s 1,340-kilometre border with Russia is the longest of any European Union member.
