First time for my Castorp to encounter snow. He is so excited about all that white stuff and all those new sensations.

Long walk with my neighbour and his Saluki. The two hounds racing through the white fields; all sounds slightly muffled by the snow; their racing back feet sending jets of snow through the air as they touch the ground. Glorious.

Great Albums - 1970s: #BruceSpringsteen – #BornToRun (1975). Bruce’s turnpike gothic had meaning for guys, like those in The Deer Hunter, who came home to find jobs had dried up and the girl they’d planned to marry had married their kid cousin. It’s weird, cause in that movie they dance to Frankie Valli (which has a belated Sopranos logic), but I always thought Bruce’s “broken heroes on a last chance power drive” fit it better. Too much on the nose, perhaps.

My body is really struggling to adapt to midday runs. I'm shaky in the morning, my stomach is upset in the evenings, and it doesn't do enough to manage my stress when at least half of that stress occurs after I run.

But it's better than nothing, in this dark season. #runner #running #BornToRun #depression #selfcare

Up on the hill. We walk, and as we reach the field I throw the stick. Castorp picks it up and goes off. He flies across the field and vanishes behind the hedge. Out of sight. My breath stops. Ah, there he is, flying out at the other end. The grass tears under his feet as he passes me. After three rounds he is done. We walk home.
