WHY do you do this:
if [ x"$foo" != x ]; then doSomething...
When you could just as easily do this:
if [ "$foo" ]; then doSomething...
Isn't that *much* more readable?

@jtheseamstress Charles Worth came from the town I live in. I got married in his house when it was the registry office (part of the county council offices). It's now a volunteer community centre.

Santa and his hi-viz elves
Every year the Bourne Lions escort Santa round the streets of Bourne, collecting for the Lions' charitable enterprises, playing Christmas music.
As the town has grown they need more and more days to fit everyone in. They promise to visit every road and street. This year they started on December 1st.

Yes, and it is on a little #suburban green , not far from my house. You don't need major expeditions to find wonderful #trees.

I've just rewatched The #Bourne Trilogy after several years and it's amazing how well the movies hold up. Sure it's tropey as hell but it works. The music's great, the characters are interesting, the plot still valid and car chases and action scenes are just gold...
Did it do justice to the books? Are the books significantly better, as it tends to be with adaptations?

It is a #Photograph I took during the worst of the #Pandemic, outside the #DerbyAndJoan hall in #Bourne .
I discovered this evening, from a chap called Stephen McKay on the #Geograoh forums, that it is called a #PeacePole, one of a worldwide network, which repeats the motto, or prayer, "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in a variety of languages.

re:what's broke - ...the #bourne #shell, apparently.
How do you make a variable in a script percolate into the caller's environment? Use "export VARNAME", of course.
Does this work for strings? Yes.
Does this work for numerics? Yes.
Does this work for arrays? Yes.
Does this work for all arrays? No.
How do you make this one special type of variable that they added a full major version ago persist? Use the "-g" flag on the array instantiation. Otherwise, you'll end up just using an empty variable silently in a bunch of places that could make commands change scope unexpectedly, which for anything more serious than destroying containers, that's...bad.
I've been finding / fighting this bug second-hand for...a while now. Finally found the bit where you can just add the '-g' flag and it all works as expected again.
But seriously, why doesn't bash just...make export work by invoking the '-g' flag, or something?
(...no, i do not want deal with the necessary refactoring to submit a patch, i want to be learning #uxn instead, or maybe never use a computer outside of permacomputing again...)
(...but hey this shell library thingy kinda falls together into workability now that I have a way to keep the environment strung together neatly for the user in between commands.)
(It's the little things, the slow grinding away of clever but convoluted things into rock-solid reliability and getting the space to pay that much attention to detail, is part of what really makes this meaningful work for me.)
@Casinoslcohol
Ah, well then one of my favorite #Bourne #movies must excite you two a lot -- #BourneLegacy. 😉🇵🇭
I was particularly amused at the motorcycle chase scene where Jeremy Renner knocked on the side of the aluminum van as he was passing it, squeezing between crazy traffic... I was like, "Oh my goodness! They got it right! That's* how you do it!" 😅
My other favorite is the very first Bourne movie, The Bourne Identity. The others are good too but mostly a blur to me.
